Slyck at CES 2010 Tech Videos From Vegas - Part II Some kid gets Tasered, pull string iPhone charger, and more!
The Asus T101MT holds a lot of potential as it enters the netbook fray. It reminds me a lot of a big iPhone, which in many ways it is. The Asus converts quickly into a tablet PC, and like your iPhone or Android, is multitouch enabled. However, the T101MT has a resistive touch screen, which requires you to actually press on the screen for it to work. The iPhone is projected capacitance, which as its name suggests, forms a grid of capacitors that detects the slightest variance in the electric field. This is more accurate and responds to the lightest tough, but also more expensive. I tended to notice that the T101MT doesn’t react quite as well to the touch as the iPhone does, but it still works rather well. It’s a credit to the mobile computer market despite not being quite as smooth as the iPhone or Android. But that’s a lot like saying a Corolla can’t accelerate like a Mustang –they’re both meant to do separate things and both do well in their niche. There’s also the Yogen pull charger, which can trickle energy into just about any small device such as an iPhone, MP3 player, Blackberry and so on – there’s an adapter available for a variety of products. The device is a lot like a car alternator: an electric field is generated by two spinning magnets. Of course, your arm and body movement is what makes this all happen. Simply pull on the string and electricity is created. Capacitors in the device regulate the voltage output so a more enthusiastic pull doesn’t fry your nice new Android. The representative told me that it can charge an iPhone in the same amount of time as a wall charger – providing you pull for an identical length of time. Yogen has a neat device here – and we can definitely see where this would be useful in an emergency, outdoors, or just on the go. Going on a tangent a bit, we noticed that Taser International is getting into the software market. But what we found entertaining was the actual Taser demonstration, which gave the crowd a good chuckle. We hope you enjoy it too. So long from CES…It’s not hard to register even if you’re a blogger, so we hope to see you all there in 2011!
