SABnzbd+ Gears Up for Big Release
What's new with web based newsgroups...

We've been watching SABnzbd+ for quite some time. What started as a quirky web based news reader has steadily matured into something much more. Although SABnzbd+ doesn't quite work as smoothly as Grabit or alt.binz, it still has managed to become popular. It's the only current news reader of consequence that's completely free and open source, with no extra fee to take advantage of all its features.

So what's the latest with SABnzbd+? The development team is gearing up for something big - the 0.5.0 final release. Currently, the development team has release 3 release candidates (the first two were private); the most recent public version is 0.5.0 RC 3. Let's go over some of the new features.

One of the best new features is that NZB files can now be associated with SABnzbd+. Try as you might, in the past it was impossible to just right click and associate an NZB. However, SABnzbd+ did have a de facto NZB association thanks to its "Watched" folder (a folder that would keep an eye on incoming NZB files), but this latest feature is huge step forward.

Another feature which may be convenient to newcomers is a five step setup wizard. Unfortunately SABnzbd+ automatically forces you through this wizard if you haven't entered your news server information - rather annoying since the old version just politely informed the user that a server account was missing. Oh well, hopefully the setup wizard will be an optional feature on the final release.

But SABnzbd+'s latest release fixes several issues and we're sure that NZB association will be a hit. What’s even more encouraging is that this open source news reader is community driven and continuously updated, a familiar story that typically leads to good things in this field. There are plenty of new features to check out, so head over to SABnzbd+'s website and check it out.
